Even Labor backbencher Tanya Plibersek, who shared Dr Lawrence's concerns about thepolicy, had little encouragement.
She said assuming Dr Lawrence was interested in the presidency, she would be just oneof a number of candidates.
And while some grassroots members would support her stance, Dr Lawrence's public criticismof the party might lose her backers.
"There would be some people who certainly support some of the things that she saidbut there'd be a lot of people who think she did a lot of damage on the way out," Ms Pliberseksaid.
"People have resigned on issues of principle before and they haven't given 45-minutepress conferences about their leader and their colleagues in the process, so I think shecould have done it in a different way."
